Faced with a dying Earth, we reached for the planets beyond. We built a spaceport in the middle of the desert, and many chose to leave. This is the story of the small town in New Mexico where it happened. This is the story of the people who stayed.
Truth or Consequences is a speculative documentary about people finding a sense of belonging in the New Mexican desert. Set in an alternate present where some have fled Earth, it tells the story of those who stayed.
The film follows residents of Truth or Consequences, NM. As they find meaning in what is rather than what could be, their stories open echoes of New Mexico’s rich and complex history of frontiership. Through observational footage, archival, and experimental animations, Truth or Consequences is a lyrical meditation on human striving, memory, and finding what we’re looking for in the unlikeliest of places.
